The Council is asking residents what they think about when local elections should be held, and whether we should have an elected mayor.
In September the council will decide when elections are held and how the council is run. This will include whether to move to a four-year elections cycle as opposed to annual elections and the possibility of having an elected mayor.
Currently, the council holds elections by thirds. This means that every elected councillor holds his or her post for four years before either retiring or going up for re-election. Local elections are held annually for three of every four years, with no elections on the fourth year.
Once elected, the councillors of the largest group choose a leader. The leader then chooses a small team of councillors from among his or her political group to form a cabinet who make decisions about council policies and services.
