The parent company of Portswood's Mecca Bingo is facing tough times in the face of the growth of online gambling and the impact of the UK smoking ban.
In a recent announcement of poor financial performance reported in the FT, Ian Burke, chief executive, said the group was not planning to close any of its 100 bingo clubs, even though a "handful" of them were losing money even before rent and rates.
The specific performance of the Portswood site is not known, but lovers of the 1930s Broadway Cinema building which is home to the club would be well advised to keep a close eye on Rank's performance, particulary in light of the building's unlisted status.
