Giant bus on trial in Portswood area

A giant bus is being trialled on Portswood and other city roads until the end of November. The new Omni-Link bus - which is NOT bendy - is 13.7 metres (45 foot) long and can carry up to 95 passengers.

The bus has three axles and features rear wheel steer to improve manoeuvrability.

The blue bus will run along the Uni-Link U1 route from Southampton Airport, via the University campus and Portswood, down The Avenue to West Quay and Dock Gate 4.

George Fair, Uni-Link operations manager, commented: "As well as a first for Southampton, we believe this bus is the only one of its kind running anywhere along the south coast at the moment. This trial is helping us achieve our aim of constantly improving our service for users and, if it is successful, we may decide that the bus will become a feature of the Uni-Link service in the future."

Have you seen or ridden the giant bus? Do you think it should become a permanent part of the fleet? Let us know your views by leaving a comment on the site.
