Southampton City Council says there have been various recent incidents of thieves phoning or visiting residents posing as council staff, to obtain bank account and national insurance details.
To avoid falling for this scam, the council advises that
it will never text, telephone or visit your home to ask for your bank or
national insurance details.
Some teams, such as housing, may ask for some details, such as your
national insurance number, to help them identify you. But they say they
will never contact you and ask for these details.
If you receive a phone call or visit from anybody who says they are
calling on behalf of the council and you don’t feel confident that they
are, you’re advised to put the phone down or close the door and ring the
council to check on 023 8083 3000. Ask to be put through to the
department that you were told they were calling from.
