Council workers vow to fight budget cuts

unison memebersOver 400 Unison members resolved to fight budget cuts at a packed lunchtime meeting (Nov 24).  The move was in response to the Conservative Council’s proposals to sack 250 workers and cut wages. After agreeing, among other things, that cuts are being “driven by political dogma”, there was a spontaneous march to the Civic Centre, where Tory council leader Cllr Royston Smith was greeted with the chant: “Why don’t you go and work at Costco” - a reference to his reported comments last week, that redundant council workers could find work at the yet-to-be-built Southampton cash and carry superstore.
