Friends of Portswood Rec, a new group set up to make the recreation ground at the top of Brickfield Road a better place to visit, and which is planning a fun day for September, holds its next meeting on Thurs, Aug 2.
The Friends group, which was formed in October 2011, aims to improve the physical, social and natural environment of the park, bring the community together and encourage sports participation by making it a better place to visit. The group says it's already arranged for a refresh of the tennis courts with the lines being repainted and new nets due to be fitted over the next few weeks, and funding has also been secured for goalposts, which should be installed by early September.
Play area
The group says the council has committed to updating the play area and installing new play equipment, following a consultation event held at the Rec in April.
Current major longer term goals are to raise funding to improve the entrances to the Rec, levelling and resurfacing at the Upper Grosvenor Road entrance with the provision of designated disabled parking, and the upgrading of the steps at the Brickfield Road entrance with the installation of a ramp to help improve access.
