A 19-year-old man was sat in his red Ford Ka with two friends outside the chemist between 1 and 1.30am on Sunday, December 12 when the incident happened.
Police say a large group of males surrounded the vehicle and opened the doors, and assaulted both the driver and his two male friends. During the attack they threatened them, demanding cash and valuables.
The driver was left needing hospital treatment for his injuries which include a suspected broken jaw.
The windows on the car were also smashed during the attack.
PC John Goulbourne is investigating the crime. “This is a very rare type of crime in our city,” he said. “The robbers used unprovoked violence to get what they wanted from those in the car. We want to find out who did this as quickly as possible and bring them to justice.
“I am asking for anyone who saw the incident or who has any information about it to contact me at Bitterne Police Station on 101 or call the charity, Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.”
A 22-year-old man was arrested in connection with the crime. He has since been released on bail until January 27 while enquiries continue.
