Privatising mail could spell end of post offices: Denham

post boxItchen Labour MP John Denham has warned that government plans to privatise Royal Mail - which will be going before parliament on Wednesday (Jan 12) - could spell the end of the post office network.

“In rushing through the privatisation of the Royal Mail, this Tory-led government is giving no safeguards to our Post Office network” he said.

“These plans will result in the breaking of the historic link between Royal Mail and Post Offices.  A privatised Royal Mail could abandon Post Offices in favour of supermarkets or high street chain stores, forcing customers to go to shopping centres to post parcels or register letters.

“A privatised Royal Mail is an unwanted Christmas present to the people of Southampton from the coalition government.”
