It might have been the worst possible year to start growing your veg, but Bitterne Parkers have been doing their very best!

To celebrate having got this far, and some with very little to show for it, the brave folk of Bitterne Park Growing Places have joined forces with Southampton Allotment and Gardens Association to celebrate having a go at growing their veg.

Please join us to celebrate your gardening achievements this year, get advice from other local growers, and take home a plant, book, or prize! You can also find out about Bitterne Park Growing Places – a local community initiative to help our neighbourhood grow its own food. Here’s how you can get involved:

  • Take a photo – the four categories are: sunflowers, vegetables, my garden joy and wildlife in my garden. Email your entries to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. by Sunday, 1st August. The winners will be chosen by visitors to our marquee on the day.
  • Make a scarecrow – any size, using any materials (the more recycled the better). A great holiday challenge for the children. Bring your scarecrow to the Southampton Allotment and Gardens Association group in the marquee before 230pm on the day. Prizes will be awarded by SAGA at 330pm.
  • Bring your plant growing questions – SAGA members will be there to answer your questions about veg growing
  • Enter our veg quiz on the day and win a free packet of seeds
  • Taste our cakes made with veg – not just carrots! – and our homemade cordial
  • Free plants, gardening and cookery books and container gardening ideas too

Look out also for Friends of Bitterne Station, St Denys Front Gardens Plus and Southampton & District Beekeepers Association.

All in all – a grand day out - see you there!
