By Maria Zaccaro, Local Democracy ReporterPlans for a new takeaway in Portswood were submitted to the city council last month.
Rio’s Piri Piri could open in Portswood Road at the site once occupied by October Books.
The number of jobs that could be created is yet to be revealed.
In planning documents developers said : “The application proposal will give beneficial use to that section of Portswood Road and will serve to raise the overall quality of the area and its appearance. The proposal will have a positive impact on the character of Portswood Road.”
But Sobhat Hussain who runs Portswood Peri Peri raised concerns over the plans.
He said the new takeaway may affect his business.
In a statement sent to the city council he said: “Since we opened on this road 15 more food shops have opened, some offering exactly the same menu and offering nothing new to this area. We don’t mind if a new food type was introduced but this is the same old options that are already available.”
A final decision on the scheme will be taken by the city council.
Southampton City Council explains on its website that planning decisions can only take account of “material planning considerations”, and gives examples of what can and cannot be considered.
