Many Highfield roads could see a 20mph speed limit introduced if proposals to Southampton City Council are approved.

Plans for what’s described as “a strategic scheme” would introduce speed limits “on key through / cross over roads, between the major trunk roads A33, The Avenue and A 35, Burgess Road and Portswood High Street, which form the outer Highfield boundary,” according to Highfield Residents’ Association’s (HRA) submission.
“This would make Highfield, as a whole, a safer, cleaner, calmer and generally more pleasant place,” it says.
The nominated roads are:
- Highfield Avenue / Highfield Lane
- University Road
- Church Lane
- Welbeck Avenue
- Shaftesbury Avenue
- Brookvale Road
- Winn Road
- Westwood Road
HRA says roads nominated already have traffic-slowing measures, so “the Highfield scheme would be cost effective, requiring 20mph signs only, as there would be minimal need for additional calming measures”.
All three Portswood ward councillors are backing the proposals, which can be downloaded in full from HRA’s website.
Separately, it’s understood an application has also been submitted to make Grosvenor Road and associated side streets 20mph zones.
As previously noted there have been several applications to introduce 20mph limits in Bitterne Park ward, including for Manor Farm Road, Glenfield Avenue, Oaktree Road, St Catherines Road, Dimond Road and on roads around Whitworth Crescent: more from this link.
There’s more information about submitting requests for 20mph zones on the council’s transport website, which says the closing date is January 14.
“If you are submitting a request you must have evidence of community support,” stresses the council.
