The first World Book Day (WBD) in the UK and Ireland took place in 1997 to encourage young people to discover the pleasure of reading, and its mission today is “to promote reading for pleasure, offering every child and young person the opportunity to have a book of their own”.
Founder Baroness Gail Rebuck recalls on the charity’s website: “We wanted to do something to reposition reading and our message is the same today as it was then – that reading is fun, relevant, accessible, exciting, and has the power to transform lives.”
To that end World Book Day also offers a selection of new £1/£1.50 books that children can get from a local bookshop, including local October Books in Portswood, with a token distributed through schools and nurseries – there’s more about that here.
At Bitterne Library local children’s authors Margaret Young, Vie Portland and Carrie Cheshire will be reading from their own books on Saturday (from 2.15pm, March 5) and sharing the story behind their writing journeys.
Spaces need to be booked either in person at Bitterne Library (SO18 5EG) or via email to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..
