Southampton City Council’s Labour administration wants to reopen St Mary’s Leisure Centre “no later than the end of August”, it has announced.

It will reopen “Subject to the completion of the democratic process” and the council “intends to work closely with the local community and other users of the Centre to design a viable long-term future for the facility”, it said.
St Mary’s was closed last December under the previous Conservative administration. A vocal campaign to reopen it emerged, and 86% of respondents to the council’s consultation said closure would have a negative impact. Labour then took control of the council in the May local elections.
