The small independent shop on Cambridge Road has served “hoppy treats” to many “discerning drinkers” for around a quarter of a century.
“Chris and Ann opened Bitter Virtue in 1997 because they thought that there were a lot of people who shared their pleasure in the fruit of the hop, but who found it difficult to find an interesting range of beers,” explains their Facebook page.
But the doors will be closing “around the end of August” – although beer is still currently being ordered.
“We would like to thank everyone who [h]as been a customer here over the last 25(?) years. You have helped an independent start-up business run all these years,” said Ann and Chris on a closure notice posted on social media.
Many customers commented, saying the shop will be missed, but wishing the owners well.
Nick Bartlett wrote on Facebook: “Thank you Chris and Ann you have taught me so much about great beers. I got my love of Belgian beers thanks to you. Good luck in your retirement.”
And Paul Noble added: “Happy retirement. Great shop and will be sadly missed.”
However in an intriguing addition to their closure notice it’s explained that the premises are to be taken over by friends “and although it will be different it will include beer amongst other goodies”.
“In addition other friends should be opening a specialist beer shop at a much primer Southampton location (look for that in October).”
