Updated: Residents with a disability or special needs will soon have the use of what's thought will be the only wheelchair accessible allotments in the city – and volunteers are being invited to help complete the work in St Denys at a community action day.

Margaret Booker of Southampton National Park City, said: "We are working with members of Front Gardens Plus [ - a community-led organisation that coordinates gardening related activities in the St Denys area - ] to create the first wheelchair accessible allotments in the St Denys Community Centre grounds.
"With the help of our local councillors and funding from the council's Community Chest, prototype planters have already been created.
"To complete the project we are looking for volunteers to help to make planters, knock down a wall, cut back shrubs and dig over soil. We also need donations of good quality wood, tools, topsoil, compost and paint/woodpreserver.
“There will also be a free BBQ
"We are holding a Community Action Day on Sunday 21st August from 11.00am to 4.00pm in the grounds of St Denys Community Centre in Priory Road near Adelaide Road
All welcome.”
