Work is expected to start on August 21 for around 15 weeks on “improving access for pedestrians and cyclists at the junction of Thomas Lewis Way and St Denys Road” that will require “lane restrictions and some overnight closures”.

In a letter to some residents the council and its partner Balfour Beatty says the new junction will include, in their words:

• A new cycleway along St Denys Road crossing the junction and safer crossing points for pedestrians
• New intelligent traffic signals at the junction. These will provide smoother and more efficient traffic movements in the area
• An extension to the dedicated left turning lane on Thomas Lewis Way onto St Denys Road heading towards Bitterne Triangle (sic) to reduce congestion

They say the work will take place in phases.

The first will involve “removing all eastbound access from Portswood onto the junction, however all westbound traffic from Thomas Lewis Way and St Denys will be able to pass through”.

The left hand lane from St Denys onto Thomas Lewis Way will be removed, but left turns will still be possible for drivers - other than of HGVs - using other lanes.

There will also be work on Thomas Lewis Way carriageways around the junction.

“Access for pedestrians and cyclists crossing the junction will be maintained,” says the letter.

Phase 2 and 3 will see work on the western approach from Portswood, which will be one way throughout, and on pedestrian areas of the junction. Pedestrian access will be maintained.

Phase 4 is planned for the future to extend the dedicated left hand turning lane from Thomas Lewis Way southbound into St Denys which will “further reduce congestion for people travelling southbound”.

“We appreciate that these works will cause disruption in the area, and we would like to take this opportunity to apologise in advance for any inconvenience or disruption this may cause, and thank you for your support whilst we deliver these improvements,” concludes the letter.
