Science comes alive in Southampton

Science WeekThe wonders of science and mysteries of the ocean and earth will be revealed at the University of Southampton’s Science Week 06 with a variety of events taking place between Saturday 11 and Saturday March 25.

Science Week 06 gets underway on Saturday March 11 with an official launch by University graduate and TV presenter Chris Packham at the city’s West Quay shopping centre between 3pm and 5pm.  Chris will be helping schoolchildren and University engineers build a Greenpower electric race car, trying out a full-size Greenpower electric race car for size, and talking to local people about his passion for science.

Families are invited to discover fascinating exhibitions and interactive displays at two key events:

  • Ocean and Earth Day at the National Oceanography Centre, Southampton on Saturday March 18 will feature the science of earthquakes, tsunamis, tornadoes and global warming. Visitors will be able to look round the new coastal research vessel the RV Callista and meet the underwater creatures of the aquarium. There will also be a competition to win a digital camera.

  • Science Day at the Boldrewood Conference Centre at Bassett Crescent East on Saturday March 25 will involve the science of time, meteorites and the Light Express Laser Show. Also on offer will be a chance to pilot the new Airbus A380 super jet airliner in a flight simulator and opportunities to create video and computer games. An iPod nano will be the prize in a competition.

Evening talks will include subjects such as the aerodynamics of swimming, flying in nature and using lasers to make and break things. All events are free of charge, and more information about the week is here

University of Southampton Deputy Vice-Chancellor Adam Wheeler said: "Science Week aims to inspire and excite the next generation of scientists and engineers who are crucial to the economic development of the UK. This is a great opportunity to learn about leading-edge science from the University’s world-leading scientists and have fun at the same time."
