The poll, which takes place for the Bitterne ward only and is not open to voters in Bitterne Park, will take place on Thursday, December 1.

It follows the sad death of former councillor Terry Streets, who had been a Conservative Bitterne councillor since 2018.

The ward is currently represented by two other Conservatives – Cllr Matthew Magee and Cllr Elliot Prior.

Eligible electors in the ward who are not already registered to vote must do so before midnight on Tuesday, November 15 to take part.

Information about registering to vote is on the council’s Guide to Voting page .

Mark Heath, returning officer responsible for elections in Southampton, said:

"As this is a by-election, we have a shorter than usual deadline following the notice of election for people that aren't registered to vote to make sure they are. I encourage people in Bitterne Ward to make sure they can have their say. It takes just a few minutes to register to vote online. You can find out more on the Your Vote Matters website, or by reading our 'Guide to Voting' on the Southampton City Council website."

It’s not yet known who the candidates will be. At the time of writing it’s understood at least some parties are still deliberating. Nominated candidates are due to be published by the council on November 7.

A list of all current city councillors by ward is available on the council's website.
