It aims to bring people together to find creative, community-led ways to ensure nature can thrive across the city.

Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust is partnering with Southampton City Council with support from Southampton Football Club and the National Lottery Heritage Fund, to create a ‘Wilder Southampton’.

Two new Wilder Communities Officers will work with local groups to develop initiatives to make the city greener and wilder, providing support, advice and practical help together with community action, ideas and conservation.

One of the officers, Jill Doubleday from Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust, said: “We believe that strong, healthy communities depend on a thriving natural environment. With ever increasing pressures from pollution, development and climate change, it is vital that everyone can play their part in turning around the fortunes for our local wildlife and habitats.”

Cllr Lisa Mitchell, cabinet member for housing and the green environment (Lab) said: “This partnership supports Our Green City priorities and will provide opportunities for communities to get involved through community ideas and action making our city greener and better for residents and wildlife.”
