A new home for people with learning difficulties is set to be built in Bitterne Park after Southampton City Council’s granted planning permission.
As previously reported, the assisted accommodation house is planned for Harcourt Road and will house three people with learning difficulties.
It will be run by Autism Hampshire.
The council’s planning officer in charge of the application said: “It gives [the residents] the opportunity to have some independence and that’s the way in which we are progressing things – trying to provide people with as much independence as possible.
“[It] helps Southampton meet its high demand for high quality purpose built specialist housing.”
Concerns were raised about parking, access and privacy – and also about disturbance from the new residents.
The officer responded to the concerns and said: “In terms of the behaviour of residents themselves and staff we’ve got to plan for reasonable behaviour.
“There is going to be 24-hour care management on this site so if there are any problems they will need to deal with them in an appropriate way.”
The panel voted unanimously in favour of the development.
