You can see jaw-dropping bicycle stunt displays, try fun bikes and get your bike checked out at The Big Bike Celebration which returns this weekend.
The family event, which takes place on Saturday June 25, from 11am - 4pm at Weston Shore, will feature displays, bikes to try, cycle training for children, free bike MOT checks, led bike rides, as well as loads of activities that don’t involve bikes, including colourful kite making, juggling skills workshops, face painting and much more. The Mayor of Southampton, Cllr Terry Matthews, and Mayoress will also be paying a visit.
The Big Bike Celebration, which is jointly organised by Sustrans, Southampton City Council and Solent NHS Trust, aims to get more people out on their bikes and enjoying some exercise. The event, which is unique to Southampton, was created to mark the last weekend of Bike Week (19-27 June) but it’s grown in popularity and is now in its fourth year.
Thea Bjaaland from Sustrans helps organise the Big Bike Celebration. “It's a celebration of cycling - to remind people of the benefits that cycling can have and see how much fun it is!” she said. “Cycling is great for everybody, of all ages and sizes. It’s a great way to get about, it’s great exercise and great fun. This year’s event combines lots of fun cycling activities with a whole load of non-cycling fun thrown in, so there's something for everyone, from children to adults.”
Southampton is hosting a range of cycling events this year that come under the umbrella of ‘Southampton's Cycling Festival’. As well as a range of smaller cycling-related events and activities across the city, Sky Ride returns on August 14 – so organisers say there really is no excuse for not getting out on your bike with friends and family!
