Legal action likely to remove ‘pitch and putt’ encampment

A ‘direction to leave’ was served on Thursday (June 29) on the unauthorised encampment on the former pitch and putt course on Riverside Park, although around five caravans remain today (July 3).

The camp set up on June 27 towards the River Walk side of the old golf course, north of Woodmill.

It followed an earlier encampment which, as reported, took over much of the playing field area in front of the pavilion on June 7, with vehicles being escorted off the park a week later.

It’s understood welfare checks, and serving a notice to leave, have to take place before a court order can be applied for. But it appears that the current ‘pitch and putt’ camp hasn’t departed within the 24-hour notice period, so legal action is being initiated to remove it from council land.

If a court issues an order it’s then likely the people will have 24 hours to comply to avoid bailiffs – potentially with police in attendance – enforcing eviction.
