According to one.network, which maps roadworks in the city, the lane closure is for a week for Network Rail Infrastructure, contacted for comment, to carry out as yet unspecified work, although it's thought to be to make brickwork safe on the bridge.

Works are also currently continuing to improve the left-hand lane off Thomas Lewis Way into St Denys - expected to last about a further week.
Bluestar later tweeted about disruption on its Service 20 as a result of the lane closure on the railway bridge, saying it was adding around 10 minutes to journey times.
#TravelAlert There is disruption on B*20 because of congestion. We are seeing delays on St Denys Road towards Portswood, due to a lane closure. Traffic is queueing back to the Cobden Bridge & Bitterne Triangle adding around 10 mins to journey times at the moment. Apologies. ^GM
