City bike hire scheme expands

Through the Breeze or Beryl app, people can now rent pedal or electric bikes from more locations across the city.

And by the end of the summer, pending bay planning approval, there will be around 380 bikes available from 105 bays.

However currently Beryl bike bays appear to be in very short supply in Bitterne Park, although they can be rented from Bitterne and Portswood, along with a raft of other city locations.

The project is part of the Solent Future Transport Zone, which is funded by the Department for Transport. It aims to reduce congestion, improve air quality, and encourage sustainable journeys. This bike share fleet supplements the Voi rental e-scooter trials taking place across the region.

Many will remember the yellow bikes offered under a previous hire scheme by YoBikes, which launched in Southampton in September 2017 and offered rides for £1 an hour. However the company pulled out of the city in 2019.
