Up to seven weeks of government and university-funded improvement work will see the Wessex and Woodmill Lane junction closed to traffic, and one-way westbound traffic only on part of Woodmill Lane during the final three weeks.

Improvements to “make it easier for people to access Swaythling Railway Station, Woodmill Lane and the University of Southampton by bus, cycle, e-scooter, walking or wheeling”, were scheduled to start Monday (Aug 8).
As reported, Phase 1 of the scheme last summer introduced traffic calming measures on Wessex Lane including two speed humps, as well as pedestrian crossings and improvements to bus stops.
This second phase of work will focus on the junction of Wessex Lane and Woodmill Lane, which will include removing the traffic island and creating a pedestrian crossing, footway widening, a new pedestrian crossing south of the junction, and drainage work.
The junction will be closed during the work with a diversion route signed, although it’s understood a footpath from Woodmill Lane to Wessex Lane will be kept open throughout.
During the final three weeks of work there will be a lane closure on Woodmill Lane due to “excavation required”, which will become one-way only westbound (towards Portswood) from Oliver Road to Portswood Road and High Road.
More details of the work are here.
Junction improvements on Wessex Lane/Woodmill Lane begin Monday (7th Aug) for 7 weeks, with the junction closed for the duration.
