The scheme will “provide a safer pedestrian crossing and cycle facilities and improve the signal technology”, says the council on its transport website.
Proposals include ‘green man’ crossings with countdown timers so pedestrians know how long they have to cross a currently very difficult to navigate junction, and changes to lights also giving cycles safer crossing, and bus priority.
Signals that are more responsive to changing traffic levels through the day are also planned.
Work will be funded by the government from the Department for Transport’s Transforming Cities Fund, says the council.
