Work is currently taking place on re-turfing the area behind the temporary fence, it’s understood with a view to reopening park for public use.

However this isn’t expected for a number of weeks as it’s likely turf will need to become established before it can be given the playground treatment.

Work to the boundary fencing is also likely to be required.

It’s unclear exactly when, or why, the playground closed, although it’s thought it’s been shut for a number of months.

And it’s understood, but unconfirmed, that the presence of rats in the area was a factor causing the playground closure.

A laminated notice by the site apologises for any inconvenience, and explains that it’s closed “Due to Health and Safety” “until further notice”.

Providing, and promptly maintaining (within two months according to planning documents), a public children’s play space was part of an agreement attached to original approval for the store in 2011.

Sainsbury’s didn’t respond to an invitation to comment on the date the playground closed, the reason for the closure, and timescale for reopening – as well as the reason why around half the lights within the store are still not in use.

Commenting on the playground closure, Portswood councillor Katherine Barbour (Green) said: “Come on Sainsbury’s, give kids somewhere to let off steam while up in Portswood.”
