Drivers face further headaches as overnight vehicular closures of Cobden Bridge and St Denys Road are planned for six nights in December for resurfacing and relining work.

It’s part of the government-funded project to improve the Southampton to Eastleigh corridor, which has recently been focusing around the St Denys Road and Priory Road junction on the A3035.
The overnight work will take place from Monday, December 11 between 8pm and 6am and involve “a full closure of St Denys Road between Thomas Lewis Way and Bitterne Triangle [sic], including Cobden Bridge,” according to comms seen from council contractor Balfour Beatty.
St Denys and Cobden Bridge will be relined, and the mandatory segregated cycle lane on St Denys Road will be installed.
Work won’t take place at weekends unless necessary due to delays, says BB.
Beleaguered St Denizens have already suffered weeks of vehicle access issues, particularly with closures of the Priory Road south junction, and with the Adelaide Road level crossing punctuating the principal route in and out of the southern area.

Residents will be delighted to learn that during the pending overnight closure hours they’ll apparently have to use a ‘waiting area’ on Thomas Lewis Way until a traffic marshal can offer further instructions about their journey home through the works.
And there will be no access from the Cobden Bridge end.
Pedestrian access is promised to be maintained throughout.

According to the one.network traffic disruption mapping site, ten weeks of scheduled work at the Priory Road junction, which started on October 16, is finally due to finish by December 22 – just shy of the ten weeks predicted.
And BB will be back in the spring to add a splash of colour.
The contractor says: “Once the surface has had time to cure, we will return and install colourful surface finishes to indicate the new cycle lanes, as well as renewing anti-skid on the carriageway. This is expected to take place in Spring 2024.”
Information on the scheme is on the council’s travel website.
