Suspected ‘ram raid’ attempt at Bitterne Park convenience store

Jupider damage 5 1 24Updated Jupider off licence and convenience store, on the corner of Bond and St Catherine’s roads, has suffered considerable damage after reportedly 'being rammed' by a van.

A local resident told bitternepark.info the shop is “badly damaged as a white service van rammed [in] to it a couple of times last night”.

They added that they saw it drive off down Bond Road but couldn’t get the vehicle’s number.

A social media post on one local group said it happened at around 3.30am on Friday.

“The front of the store is structurally wrecked though and the lovely owner in shock,” wrote the contributor.

They added that local residents who saw anything were needed to come forward “so they can catch who ever did it”.

The shop itself is equipped with a number of CCTV cameras, but it’s unknown whether any relevant footage was captured.

Contractors appeared to be on the scene at around 12.30pm on Friday assessing damage, and the landlord was thought to be at the site at the time of writing.

As reported, Jupider only reopened more regularly in November after a few weeks of sporadic trading hours, apparently for personal reasons.

A police spokesperson said: "We were called shortly after 4am this morning (Friday 5 January) to a report that a van had collided a number of times with a shopfront on St Catherine’s Road.

"It was reported that two men had then attempted to gain access to the shop but were unsuccessful and left the scene in the van a short time later.

"Nobody was inside the store at the time and no injuries have been reported.

"We have attended the scene and our enquiries are ongoing today."

Update 4pm: The shop has now been boarded up.
