Southampton's Itchen Bridge faces around eight weeks of closure to motor vehicles for essential maintenance this summer.

The closure will be so the council can undertake what it describes as the “most significant programme of maintenance works to the Itchen Bridge crossing since it first opened”.
Dates, full details of the works, and diversion routes are yet to be announced, but a closure is thought likely to have a knock-on effect on Bitterne Road West and Bitterne Park.
Cllr Eamonn Keogh, cabinet member for transport, acknowledged the inconvenience, but underscored the imperative nature of the maintenance to ensure the bridge's longevity.
“We fully appreciate the disruption that the closure of the Itchen Bridge to motor vehicles will cause and apologise for the inconvenience, however there is no other way to undertake this maintenance and it must be completed to ensure the health of the Itchen Bridge going forward,” he said.
The bridge will remain open for pedestrians and cyclists following signed routes around work areas.
