Work to recover from subsidence on St Denys Road, which resulted in a long-standing lane closure on the westbound approach to Thomas Lewis Way just as previous major roadworks were finishing, could last until the end of March.

It’s understood that “major subsidence” occurred by the railway bridge leading up to the Thomas Lewis Way crossroads in early December.
The lane closure now ironically causes further delays on St Denys Road, which was last year the subject of lengthy roadworks, concluding in December, intended to improve journey times for all users.
Current works are listed on one.network as potentially lasting until March 29, with responsibility for this “road event” attributed to Network Rail.
Portswood ward councillor John Savage (Lab) said there are indications the area has been a problem for years.
He said: “The major subsidence occurred around 10 December and I had a site meeting with BB [Balfour Beatty] and network rail engineers on site. NWR [Network Rail] began work shortly after.
“Initially the pavement section was completely blocked off but I was able to negotiate through BB to reopen it while works continues.”
He added that the bridge section of the road has “key utility assets” running through it, and it was important they were undamaged. He said he’s currently waiting for an update on progress.
Network Rail and Southampton City Council did not immediately respond to a request for comment. We’ll endeavour to update this piece if they respond over the next few days.
