God’s House Tower in Southampton is set to host an evening of Arabic and English poetry and music, in celebration of World Poetry Day, showcasing the talents of local poets.
The event, organised by the God’s House Tower Poetry Stanza Group, promises an evening of diverse performances.
The group's been active for three years, initially focusing on eco-poetry.
Now it's shifted its attention to the theme of peace in light of recent global events.
Among the featured artists is Bitterne Parker Carol Bunday, left, whose poetry, described as both serious and light-hearted, reflects a range of emotions and experiences. Carol joined the group as she wanted encouragement to write on a regular basis, and she has written every month since January 2022.
She says she’s expanded her knowledge of the of the different forms of the art, and been encouraged to be brave enough to try different ways of writing poetry.
Other performers include Claire McAllister, Hazel Inskip, and Andy Howes, each bringing their unique style and perspective to the room.
World Poetry Day, observed annually on March 21, is a UNESCO initiative aimed at celebrating cultural diversity and linguistic expression through poetry. Established in 1999, the day serves as a platform to honour poets, promote poetry education, and foster interdisciplinary collaboration in the arts.
Guests can expect an engaging evening starting at 7:30 pm on Thursday, March 21, with doors opening at 7 pm for drinks from the bar. Tickets are priced at £7, available through Eventbrite.
