Labour retains control of city; wins in BP & Portswood wards

Gordon CooperLabour has retained control of Southampton City Council in the local elections, with wins for the party in both Bitterne Park and Portswood wards.

The full make-up of the council is now: Labour 36; Conservative 10; Liberal Democrats 4; Green Party 1.

17 out of 51 seats were up for election, one in each of the city’s 17 Wards. 

Gordon Cooper won by a whisker over the Tory candidate in the Bitterne Park seat for Labour, while John Savage fended off opposition from the Greens, holding on to his seat for Labour in Portswood.

In Bitterne Park Cooper polled 1,634 with David Fuller for the Conservatives on 1,545.

He told bitternepark.info: "Really pleased to have been selected as councillor for BP and look forward to working with my Labour colleagues Amanda Barnes-Andrews and Phil Webb to represent the interests of the ward.” 

Lindsi Bluemel for the Greens polled 338, Lib Dem Nick Myers 142, Reform’s Adrian Royle 160 and Graham Henry for TUSC polled 63.

Neil Kelly polled 880 for the Greens, the Conservative Nicholas Moulton 365, John Langran for Lib Dems 197, Reform candidate Caroline Jobson 114 and TUSC’s Tony Twine 67.
