• Labour landslide: Wins for party in Southampton
Southampton Test has a new MP for the first time in 27 years – but the constituency remains in the hands of the Labour Party.
Satvir Kaur was successful in her campaign to take over the seat from party colleague and veteran politician Alan Whitehead.
Former Southampton City Council leader Ms Kaur received 15,945 votes, storming home with a majority of 9,333.
Conservative Ben Burcombe-Filer was her nearest competitor with 6,612 votes, with Reform UK’s John Edwards next in line with 5,261 votes.
The Green Party’s Katherine Barbour came third narrowly ahead of Thomas Gravatt, who represented the Liberal Democrats.
Workers Party candidate Wajahat Shaukat came sixth in front of Trade Unionist and Socialist Coalition’s Maggie Fricker.

After the result was declared, Ms Kaur, who is a serving Shirley ward councillor, said: “I am Southampton through and through. It is where I was born and bred and always lived.
“I often call this city the best in the world because of how brilliant the people of Southampton are.
“You have made me who I am and tonight you have made the daughter of a market trader from our inner city our next member of parliament.”
The 2024 general election was the first Southampton Test contest not to have Mr Whitehead on the ballot paper since Margaret Thatcher led the Conservative Party to victory in 1979.
Praising the work of her predecessor, Ms Kaur said: “He has represented us with the utmost integrity, dedication and kindness.
“I am acutely aware that I have enormous shoes to fill but I take on this mantle with humility but also the strongest possible determination to serve our city as he did.
“To champion it, to fight for it, to help reach our huge potential and deliver the change people voted for today.”
