In the event only a small group of mainly masked men draped in flags reportedly appeared. The two groups were separated by police. One counter-protester who took this photo, Dan O'Farrell, said: "It felt like a beautiful example of Southampton people coming together to show unity and social diversity in the face of the grim scenes of intolerance and hatred seemingly sweeping the country."

Southampton Stand Up to Racism is also promoting a 'Unity Rally' for 1pm at the Bargate on Saturday.
