Since the eastbound St Denys Road route closed in early October, lane closures have caused heavy traffic congestion, forcing thousands of drivers to use other bridges over the Itchen.

Originally work was expected to conclude by the end of October.

The current phase involves rebuilding the road’s sublayers to stabilise the structure, requiring the lane closures to prevent vibrations that could compromise the work, says the latest update.

From December 1 the council hopes one westbound lane will reopen, although Adelaide Road will see limited daytime closures to allow new layers to cure.

The council has thanked residents for their patience during these repairs and noted that all dates are approximate, with progress depending on weather and other factors.

The full update is on the council’s project website.
