A design by Jaya, a year 6 pupil at the school, was chosen from more than 900 entries to a Christmas card competition organised by Southampton Itchen MP Darren Paffey.

The MP visited the school on Friday (December 13) to present a certificate to the winner.

While Jaya was not able to be in school that day, her classmates came together in the Christmas spirit to accept her award and celebrate her achievement.

Jaya’s festive treatment of the Bargate features on the front of Darren’s card which will be sent to people across Southampton Itchen and across the UK – including to fellow MPs and the Prime Minister.

Two runner-up designs are featured on the back of the card. These were designed by Bella, a pupil at Valentine Primary School, and Hano, a pupil at Hope Community School. They were also visited on Friday to thank them for their creativity and present certificates.

The winner and runners-up have also been given free tickets to see the Jack and the Beanstalk panto at the Mayflower Theatre.

“I was delighted with the response to my first Christmas card competition and to receive so many fantastic submissions,” said Paffey.

“It’s clear that we’ve got so many fantastically creative children in the constituency and it was a real festive treat to see what they had come up with. The only hard part was choosing our winners! Well-deserved congratulations to Jaya, Bella and Hano for their winning submissions, which stood out in a very large and competitive field.”

The competition was open to all children in key stages one and two.
