Police said they were called shortly after 3pm after reports of a group of young people seen around Bitterne Park holding suspected poles and baseball bats.
The order, under Section 34 of the Antisocial Behaviour, Crime and Policing Act (2014), was authorised at 4.05pm and remained in place until 7.45am on Friday.
Southampton Neighbourhood Policing Team Inspector Jeanette Maidment said: “We know that there has been speculation in the local area and that people have been concerned to hear of these reports this afternoon.”
She said officers are patrolling the area, and residents with concerns are advised to call 101 quoting reference number 1149.
Police posted on Friday that the team had been out during school drop-off and would again be present for school pick-up. They added that an officer had also “visited Bitterne Park School to speak with the staff and pupils during break time to discuss any concerns that have arisen as a result of the incident”.
