Southampton City Council (SCC) said in a statement the move was “As a result of the feedback received from local people and an interim recommendation from independent road safety auditors”.
The speed limit on Church Lane is also to be reduced to 20mph “to improve safety for children, parents and others walking, wheeling or cycling in the area,” said SCC.
A petition on SCC’s website calling for the Labour-controlled authority to “halt the bus gate trial immediately” has attracted 1108 signatures at the time of writing.
A separate petition launched by Cllr Thomas Gravatt (Lib Dem, Swaythling ward) and promoted through a sponsored post on social media, has attracted 972 signatures.
SCC’s independent road safety audit into the new traffic arrangements in Portswood is due to conclude next week.
