The work is part of the £75m project to replace and enhance the ageing bridge, which currently impacts traffic, particularly bus services.
Network Rail has been appointed to help develop the Outline Business Case for the project, following a £1.45m Department for Transport grant received in September 2024.
The proposal includes replacing the bridge with two new highway bridges, along with improved pedestrian and cycle facilities. The work aims to support economic growth in the city, with anticipated benefits in air quality and biodiversity.
Southampton City Council (SCC) says further details on the survey work and any potential disruptions will be shared as the project progresses.
Shanmukh Khanna from Network Rail said: “We are looking forward to getting started,” while councillor Eamonn Keogh, SCC cabinet member for environment and transport, said: "While there are still many steps to go, we are working in partnership with Network Rail and our other stakeholders in progressing this vital enhancement on this key travel corridor.”
