The refurbished area is regularly used by pupils from Portswood Primary School and is popular with local families after school and at weekends.
The project was funded by Southampton City Council and the Friends of Portswood Rec, with pupils from Portswood Primary School contributing through fundraising.
Kompan Ltd, which supplied the equipment, also ran a colouring competition for the school, with 10 winners attending the opening.
Bev Pearce from the Friends group said: “The council have been brilliant with their support… The opening of Portswood Rec is a celebration of what can be achieved when we work together.”
Cllr John Savage, cabinet member for green city and net zero, added: “I’m grateful to everyone involved in this project and I hope the children will enjoy their reward for all their hard work and fundraising efforts.”
