The Environment Agency reports that it’s launched a new study to find ways to help endangered salmon complete their migration to the sea from the River Itchen - and to improve the resilience of the river system near Riverside Park.

Each spring, juvenile salmon (or smolts) begin their journey to the sea from the Itchen, but now face major challenges at the river’s lower reaches due to manmade structures and changes in flow.
The new study, running until October, will look at ways to improve fish passage, restore river habitats, and boost resilience against climate impacts — with community groups already playing a role in shaping its aims.
