Police were called to the Waitrose shop at around 4.15am to “reports of a theft in progress”.
Three individuals were said to have been using the van to attempt to force entry to the ATM.
Police said all suspects, wearing balaclavas, “fled the scene on foot”, with no money stolen.

A cordon was still in place in part of the Waitrose car park at lunchtime Tuesday, with most of the machine appearing to be on the pavement.
Now officers are asking for anyone who saw the vehicle between August 10 and the time of the incident to contact them.
