The council said independent monitoring of the Portswood Project trial in May found fewer cars and more pedestrians on Portswood Broadway, but a rise in traffic on surrounding residential streets prompted safety and congestion concerns, leading to the trial being halted in its current form.
The council said it remains committed to promoting greener travel in Southampton, with plans to expand bus services, introduce more priority measures, and add options such as weekend park and ride and extra night routes.
The council said funding originally earmarked for the Portswood Project will now be used for other transport improvements along the Eastleigh–Southampton corridor, with local people and businesses to be consulted on the options.
“We are dedicated to using the remaining Transforming Cities funding to deliver travel improvements in the Eastleigh to Southampton corridor and are committed to engaging with local people and community groups on what opportunities could do the most good,” said Cllr Christie Lambert, cabinet member for transport.
