Police said a murder investigation is underway after they were called just before 11.30pm to reports of an altercation in Belmont Road.

An unidentified man was pronounced dead at the scene.

The section of St Denys Road from Thomas Lewis Way to Portswood past Belmont Road was still closed on Thursday morning, with police at present. St Denys Road was later reopened, although its junction with Belmont Road to the south remained closed on Thursday evening.

Investigating officer DCI Rebekah Bartholomew said: "We are in the early stages of our investigation, and my team are working hard to piece together the exact circumstances and understand the moments that led up to the call to us.

"At this time, I believe this to be an isolated incident, but if you do have any concerns then please do not hesitate to speak with officers who will be in and around Belmont Road throughout the coming days."

Anyone with information or video footage from the Belmont Road area from around 11pm to 11.30pm last night is asked to contact police, either by speaking to officers at the scene, calling 101 quoting 44250545892 or via their website.

Crimestoppers can also be contacted anonymously on 0800 555 111.
