A sixth-form student has started an ePetition calling on the council to hold school catering companies accountable for the quality and cost of meals provided to children and young people.

The student, reflecting on their own experience, said the current school food often consists of “pizza, cookies, cakes, sandwiches, crisps, and fizzy drinks,” and went on to brand the daily offerings as ‘unhealthy slop’, with healthy options rarely prioritised.
They highlighted concerns for pupils on free school meals and others just above the threshold, who may not get enough nutritious food.
The ePetition, open on the council’s website until April 1, has so far attracted 18 signatures.
