Harbour Lights Picturehouse has appealed for public support following the announcement of plans to redevelop Ocean Village, which it says include a proposed tower block on the site currently occupied by the cinema.

The cinema said it still has more than 10 years remaining on its lease and would continue operating as normal while landowners explored their long-term plans.
Customers who value the venue are being encouraged to respond to the public consultation on the Ocean Village masterplan before the feedback deadline of June 19.
Yattendon Group (YG), parent company of MDL Marinas, says on the masterplan website it is the principal landowner within the Quarter and has commissioned this masterplan following discussions with Southampton City Council. “Together, they share an ambition to support the continued regeneration of the area as part of Southampton’s wider renaissance”, says the site.

Harbour Lights, part of the Picturehouse chain, says its cinemas are intended to be places where people can "eat, meet and relax", alongside screening films and hosting events.
Social media users responding to the announcement voiced support for the cinema, with one describing the prospect of its loss as "an absolute travesty", while another said it was "an extremely important venue for films, not least those not considered 'mainstream'".
