Updated A key route used by cyclists into town is slated for much-needed “improvements”.

 

Priory Road south in St Denys, which forms part of Southampton Cycle Network Route 7 and National Cycle Route 23, is used by many cyclists as part of journeys to and from the city – but it has long been regarded by many as something of a white-knuckle ride.

Now Southampton City Council has revealed that improvements are planned for the long-neglected stretch, although the extent of the work was not specified in a press release last week [see update below: Ed].

“The council is ... continuing work to improve local walking and cycling routes, with Lawn Road resurfaced in June and further improvements planned for Priory Road to create smoother, more comfortable journeys,” said SCC.

Separately, it’s understood that new fencing and gate arrangements at Aldi’s car park between Empress Road and Bevois Valley could mean the cut-through to Bevois cycle paths is restricted to store opening times only.

Aldi was contacted for comment.

• In an update on Tuesday (July 14), Portswood councillor Kat Barbour (Green) said it had been confirmed Priory Road “will be surfaced in the autumn”.

She previously told bitternepark.info: “The residents of St Denys and Priory Road have waited far too long for this work to be programmed.The Green Party is delighted that after a sustained period of pressuring the administration for action, they have seen sense with these plans for Priory Road and Lawn Road. It is good to cycle along Lawn Road as the surface no longer gives one the shudders!
