A new scheme aimed at reducing disruption caused by roadworks on some of Southampton’s busiest roads has been approved by the government.

Southampton City Council said the lane rental scheme [see previously] will encourage utility companies, contractors and highway authorities to complete works more efficiently, work together to share road space and carry out projects at less disruptive times.
The scheme will allow charges to be applied based on the time taken to complete works, with any surplus funds split between highway maintenance and projects aimed at reducing congestion. The council said the scheme could help improve journey reliability, public transport and air quality.
The move comes as a number of temporary traffic measures continue across the city, including work on sections of Thomas Lewis Way, ongoing since late May and scheduled until July 31. Other current works include overnight closures on Itchen Bridge, urgent Southern Water works on Shirley High Street, lane restrictions around Civic Centre Road, and temporary traffic lights on Peartree Avenue expected to remain in place until around July 24.
