Southampton City Council says it is looking at ways to improve the public spaces and appearance of the area and wants feedback before developing proposals further.
It says a wider public consultation is planned for the autumn.
A questionnaire asks businesses about issues including the attractiveness of the centre, shopfronts, the mix of businesses, pavements, cleanliness, lighting, safety, greenery, seating, parking, deliveries, refuse storage, traffic and anti-social behaviour.
Businesses are also asked which potential improvements would have the biggest positive impact.
Options include:
- seating;
- greenery and trees;
- improved signage;
- designated delivery-driver waiting areas;
- public art or installations; and
- events.
They are also asked what would improve safety and whether they would be interested in a traders’ association.
Businesses have until August 23 to complete the council's questionnaire.

The exercise comes after the controversial Portswood bus gate, which was introduced partly to encourage people to spend more time and money in the area, was suspended in May 2025.
Meanwhile, the proposed redevelopment of the Portswood shopping centre into student flats with ground-floor retail units has stalled.The former shops are now closed and their premises boarded up.
